Collections are an Activity type that give you the option to group or sequence multiple Paths (and only Paths). These are organized by Sections, which you can order in whatever way you see fit. It’s easy to create a multi-stage certification program using Collections, for example.

We're big fans of collections at Intellum -- you should see the action figure wall at Intellum HQ, where we collect all our favorite superheroes; including Superhero Librarian - Nancy Pearl. You heard us right: Superhero Librarian.

This article will show you how to create a Collection, add Paths to a Collection, and everything you should know about Collection Properties. It also gives you a general idea of how Collections work for your learners.

CREATING A COLLECTION

A Collection is similar to a Path in the way that it shares virtually all of a Path's properties. You build a Collection in the same way you'd create any other type of activity:

CREATE A NEW COLLECTION

  1. Navigate to the Activities list.
  2. Click the New Activity button.
  3. Select Collection from the dropdown menu.
  4. Enter the Collection Title and Description in the pop-up box.
  5. The Duration feature gives learners an idea of the amount of time they'll spend with the Activity based on your best estimate.
  6. Click the Save button when finished to complete creating the Collection.

The Collection Content page appears once you have saved your Collection.

Adding a Path to Your Collection

ADD AN EXISTING PATH

  1. From the Collection Content page, click the Add New Path button.
  2. Select Choose Existing from the menu. A search window appears.
  3. Search for your Path using the Path title or keywords from the title. Intellum auto-fills results as you type.
  4. Select the appropriate Path from your Search results. Click Save to add the Path to your Collection.

ADD A NEW PATH

  1. From the Collection Content page, click the Add New Path button.
  2. Select Path from the menu.
  3. Create a new Path following the appropriate steps.

PATH OPTIONS

Once a Path is added to a Collection, it can be moved within a Section, or moved to other Sections, by using the "hamburger" icon to the right of the Activity. The three-dot icon to the right of the Path name helps bring up a Settings for the Activity in the Path.

  • Settings
  • Exempt a User from the rest of the Collection if this Activity is Passed - if Yes is selected, when a learner completes this Path, they are not be required to complete any further Paths in the Collection.
  • Delete removes the Activity from the Path. Deleting an Activity from a Path does not delete the Activity in the platform.
  • Go to Activity takes you to an Activity's Properties page.

ADDING SECTIONS TO A COLLECTION

Sections are designed to group the Paths in your Collection with the goal of organizing your curriculum. Sections can also be carried by using the “hamburger” icon to the right of each Path -- bringing all of the Paths within that Section along for the ride.

CREATE A SECTION

  1. From the Collection Content page click ** + Add New Section**.
  2. Add information for the new Section:
    • Section Name - Name your Section. Section names can help with Path organization (i.e. Section 1, Section 2, etc.) or in building Path context (i.e. Introductory Material, Takeaway Resources, etc.).
    • Description - Provides learners with a description for the content covered in the Section.
    • Lock Activities Until - Locks learner access to Activities in a Section until a specific date.

SECTION SETTINGS & PROPERTIES

Once you create a Section, each one that exists within a Collection features its own options for the purpose of controlling its appearance and functionality for learners.

The three-dot icon near the Section Name is geared towards editing the Section Information or with the goal of deleting the Section.

The Complete in Any Order drop-down help to determine whether the Activities in that Section can be completed in any order, must be completed in order, or whether or not they are optional.

The All drop-down is used to determine how many Activities in the Section are required, which depends on the number of Activities that are in the Section.

COLLECTION PROPERTIES

On the Properties page, you'll see nearly all of the common Activity Properties page. There are, however, a couple differences:

When enabled in a Collection's Properties, Deep Search will hide the individual Paths included in the Collection from appearing in search results within the context of the Collection - as seen below:

NOTE:

  • Collections do not feature a "Display as Cards" option for learners -- by default the platform displays Paths within a Collection as cards.
  • Collections cannot be scheduled like other Activity Types.
